Tips for Backyard Noise Reduction

Is your home located near a busy highway? Perhaps next to a loud train track?  If you are worried about noise reduction around your home, then I have good news for you!    There are a variety of tips and techniques, including soundproof fence solutions that you can implement to reduce the noise in your home and yard.  Vegetation, trees, fountains, and acoustic fence panels have been used for years.

Builders and commercial sites often rely on fence panels to reduce the sounds of machinery, equipment, and construction noise.  But these panel fences aren’t just for commercial and industrial sites, the same technology and landscaping techniques that keep work sites quiet can be used to create a peaceful yard and ensure you get a pleasant night’s sleep.

Here are some tips to keep you home and backyard noise free.

Reflect Sound with Acoustic Fencing

Some builders design homes specifically so that the yards have sound deadening qualities.  Others however, couldn't care less and leave it entirely up to the home owners.  If your home is in the latter category, don’t worry.

One of the best solutions is to erect a soundproof fence around your home.  These panels fit snugly together to create a sound reflection system and reduce the noise your experience in your home and yard.  Each panel acts as a sound rebound surface, sending loud noises back to their source.

Noise can even be more efficiently deflected if you select a flexible material, since they tend of direct sound waves away from your home.  Although some of these fences can be costly, their easy installation, low maintenance, and beautiful finishes are well worth the investment.

Select Shrubs, Trees and Plants To Absorb Sound

The best sound reduction solution is to install a soundproof fence.  However, there are still more ways to block sound and even increase the effectiveness of your acoustic fence panels.

One easy solution is to plant some large shrubs and foliage throughout your yard.  Plants, foliage and other landscaping techniques are a great way to absorb some of the noise in your yard and prevent the sound from reverberating through your home. Be sure to focus on the noisier areas of your yard, such as next to the road or along with fence perimeter.

Some of the best plants to use are ones that have thick, broad leaves, solid bark, and thick coverage for sound waves to get lost in.  Be careful and leave enough room for these plants to grow and cover, because in order to get the maximum sound reduction there needs to be enough space around them to work effectively.

Fighting Sound with Sound

I know that it may sound crazy, but you can combat some of the disrupting noises in your neighbourhood by adding noise-making features to your yard.  Water fountains and features are most commonly used for this purpose.  They can block out sound form coming into your yard while producing a pleasant, tranquil noise.  If this is not a possibility for your yard, you may consider adding features to your yard that are known to attract song birds and other wildlife.
